The Midwives series gets better with each book; the third entry has amazing characters and rich historical details. You’ll be able to see the mountains and rivers of 1842 Virginia in your head as you read. Eakes effectively explores the practices of midwives at the time, when they were often the only medical help that people had to rely on.
Esther Cherrett has been trained by her mother as a midwife; this is the only thing she has wanted to do since she was a young girl. When a scandal threatens their way of life, she must leave her family to keep the wagging tongues silent. She gets a teaching job in the mountains of Virginia and lands in the middle of a decade-old feud between two families. She also is attracted to two men on opposite sides of the feud.
